Total Body Dentistry

The importance of your oral health

The connection between dental disease and other bodily diseases has been well documented. Uncontrolled gum disease has been linked to diabetes, heart disease, and low birth weight of infants. The inflammatory products from your gums can enter your blood stream and affect distant organs. So, as dentists, we are not simply concerned for your mouth, but for your overall well-being.

Hormonal conditions such as puberty and pregnancy can significantly affect your gums and teeth. Elevations of estrogen and progesterone can cause gum disease. Morning sickness can cause cavities and acid erosion of tooth enamel. Tooth pain can cause emotional stress in expecting mothers. Uncontrolled gum disease, as mentioned earlier, can negatively affect your body’s ability to mature fully in the womb. Thus, we recommend regular dental checkups during pregnancy.
